A Food Lover’s Adventure in Cyprus

A Food Lover’s Adventure in Cyprus

I’ll openly admit it — I love food. One of my favourite parts of group travel is the joy of tasting new flavours, trying different dishes, and exploring local cuisine with like-minded adventurers. Being a Mediterranean island, Cyprus is bursting with seasonal flavours that shift as the months roll by, thanks to its fresh, local produce. Honestly, the food is one of the main reasons I chose to make Cyprus my home — I simply can’t get enough of it!

Cyprus is very much a meat-loving nation, and many of its most traditional and well-loved dishes feature meat. But don’t worry — there’s no shortage of fresh fruit, vibrant vegetables, and irresistible pastries that locals adore just as much.

A Morning Treat at the Bakery

In any Cypriot town or city, you’ll find bakeries on almost every corner, and in the mornings they’re filled with the irresistible scent of freshly baked bread, cakes, and pastries. They’re incredibly popular with the locals — and once you try them, you’ll see why!

Pastries here come stuffed with all sorts of local flavours, from olives and halloumi to sweet and savoury delights. It’s the perfect way to start the day — popping into your favourite bakery, picking up a freshly baked snack, and heading out to see what adventures await.

Long, Lazy Meals and the Magic of Meze

In Cyprus, meals are about so much more than food — they’re about connection, family, and time spent together. Evening meals often last four or five hours, with no rush whatsoever. Restaurants here expect you to relax, savour each bite, and enjoy the company you’re in.

One of the most popular ways to dine, especially with a big group, is the meze. This is a true feast of small dishes — either meat or fish — served one after another until you’re completely full (and then a few more arrive just for good measure!).

Meat meze often features pork cooked in a variety of delicious ways, while fish meze celebrates the day’s freshest catch, grilled or baked with mouth-watering herbs and spices. Every meze is served with salads, and the type of potatoes on offer usually depends on the region you’re in. For an authentic experience, nothing beats sharing a meze with friends in a traditional taverna — it’s pure Cypriot joy.

The Simplicity of a Cypriot BBQ

Another local favourite is the Cypriot BBQ — or souvla — a simple yet utterly amazing dish. Large chunks of pork or chicken are slowly cooked over charcoal on a rotating skewer for hours until they’re tender, juicy, and full of smoky flavour. The meat is seasoned with just a touch of herbs, salt, and pepper — the simplicity is what makes it perfect.

A proper souvla feast comes with all the Mediterranean must-haves: fresh salads, halloumi and feta, dips like hummus, taramasalata and tzatziki, plenty of bread, and of course, local wine. It’s always a big family-and-friends affair — full of laughter, chatter, and plates that never stay empty for long.

Must-Try Local Dishes

Cyprus has so many traditional dishes to fall in love with. Moussaka is a hearty favourite, layered with aubergine or potatoes, rich meat sauce, and creamy béchamel — originally from the Levant but now a staple in Cypriot homes and restaurants. Koupepia (stuffed vine leaves) are another delight, filled with minced meat, rice, and herbs.

Then there’s stifado, a comforting, slow-cooked stew made with beef or rabbit, onions, and a generous splash of red wine — perfect for chilly winter evenings.

And my personal favourite? Kleftiko. This slow-roasted lamb or goat dish is traditionally cooked in a clay oven and served with potatoes. It’s simple, rustic, and absolutely bursting with flavour. I love stopping off at a small village taverna after work, picking up a portion of Kleftiko that’s been roasting all day, and taking it home to enjoy — it’s heaven on a plate.
